I found this book, looking for free titles. It sat in my que for quite sometime. Then I started reading it. I was confused, and didn't stay interested. I wasn't ready to enjoy it. Finally I opened it again. And couldn't put it down. Jacob, Abigail, Gideon, and Malini. As unlikely a group as you can imagine. And that makes them so irresistible. There are some spiritual overtones, but the author does not seem to be pushing any religious agenda. It does however make those with a spiritual nature, think, and think hard about their own views and beliefs. I found myself stopping and replaying a scene from the book in my minds eye, and sometimes, that was very impacting on me. The "What if..?" factor. The plausibility of each scenario. Each new occurrence, each new dilemma, are all part of an intricate tapestry, woven with care. Prepare yourselves, you will be touched by these stories, and become quite attached to the characters. And it will play with your imagination, in a wonderful new way.Product details

The plot was pretty slow at the beginning, but its second half didn’t disappoint. I was actually surprised to find religious references, which is not common in today’s world.
I don’t wanna spoil it but I was pretty fascinated by the magic proposed here. Even though it is not its main topic, it also touches a bit on eco-critic. I was actually expecting a big turn out on that one but hopefully on the next book. I enjoyed it and recommend it )
Soulkeepers wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. But it was awesome just the same.
Jacob Lau loses his father first, then his mother disappears and weird dreams begin of a winged creature carrying her away. After the disappearance of his mother, Jacob is forced to leave his home in Hawaii and move in with his uncle in Paris, IL (since I'm a native of central Illinois and I've been to Paris many times, this grabbed my attention. I love books that take place close to home). Illinois is the polar opposite of Hawaii, and a huge adjustment for the 15 year old, socially outcast in the small town.
Strange things start to happen to Jacob and his life. Dr. Abigail Silva tells him he's a warrior, a defender. He thinks that she's strange too, and she's not telling him everything about herself, her weird garden, and even stranger cat. Jacob finds love (and almost loses it) with Malini, a beautiful outcast much like him.
Together Jacob and Malini begin to make discoveries about Dr. Silva, her garden, and the bizarre creatures that come into and out of the garden.
Soulkeepers is a tale of magic, strangely odd like an Alice in Wonderland-ish type adventure, and young love. I enjoyed it immensely and what a great read for $0.00!! Pick your copy up today.

I read a lot of reviews complaining that this is a Christian book that was forced on them out of the blue. First of all, one can always stop reading. It's a choice. Secondly, this is not a Christian book. A Christian book would contain the premise that there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus. This book uses the Bible like other YA books I have recently read that used Greek mythology as their base and branched out. It also claims that all roads to the goodness that rules the universe are compatible and equally acceptable. It even contains sorcery as a viable option. This is NOT a Christian view.
Jacob Lau awakens inside a hospital with no memory of how he got there or where his mother is. He is forced to go live with an uncle he's never known on the mainland and begin life again in a small nowhere town. At night he dreams of monsters.
Then, strange things begin happening, all involving water. When his mysterious neighbor appears telling him that she will train him to use his powers, his normal life is over. His neighbor reveals that Jacob is a Soulkeeper, a protector of human souls from Watchers (demons), and that his unique power element is water.
The only person in the small town that will give Jacob the time of day is Malini Gupta, a young Indian girl who is also semi new to town. She believes his tales of events and feels drawn toward him.
But, Jacob's neighbor isn't who she seems to be, and soon things get dangerous, and demons are in town!
My Thoughts-
Great story! This book really sets the framework for the entire series. We meet all the main characters, are introduced to the world of Soulkeepers and Watchers, and are left with tons of mysteries to answer in the following books.
I love the budding romance between Jacob and Malini, two strong characters who are faced with severe challenges, but who build trust in one another. Abigail, the strange neighbor, is a fun mystery. She seems to know everything, but is unwilling to tell. Is she good or bad? What is up with her secret garden? And why does a strange cat follow her everywhere? All good plot points for tension building.
The storyline resembles classic good vs. evil tales, but this one starts to hold to a more Biblical belief. It is in no way preachy, the plot flows smoothly and can be followed and believed by anyone. There is a mixture of myth as well, mixing Fate, Death and Time into the equation.
I enjoyed it and bought the second book the minute I finished the first. Each book has been about one of the main characters, but everything ties together so you still feel as if you are in the same story the whole time. 5 Stars!
